NIGERIANNESS IN POLICE FORCE

Over the years we have witnessed metamorphosis in the Nigeria Police. Different era ushered in different nomenclature for the Nigeria police force. For instance, Marwa’s regime birthed ‘Operation Sweep’ in Lagos, and so other states, in their attempts to show the commitments of police in ensuring security of life and property.

It is interesting to know however, that deeply within the police lay bad eggs among the good ones who do not only spoil others but as well destroy and contaminate them, making them of no reputation among citizens. These and many criminal activities they have carried out through politician t perpetrate their corrupt practices both while in office or during electoral processes to rig and manipulate elections.

The populace either is not deceived by their series of ecdysis in attempt to be welcomed into the society. On the contrary their heinous and corrupt practices are being exposed day by day. Extortion and bribery collection among the police from the top officials to the lowest had ever since remained major spots among others in the force.

Their routine charade of sanitizing the police has failed to wash off the spots that have become permanent stain among them. Hat is to say that, no matter how mush it rains, it can not wash off the spots of a leopard.

Recently, it seems to me that the police have acquired new skill in embarking on their bribery mission after being banished from extorting money from motorists, most especially the commercial city of Lagos. They now device new scheme of compelling motorists to give money in exchange of whatever goods they are carrying. Failure to do so amount to seizure or unnecessary delay of such individuals.

One may be curious to ask how they are able to spot vehicles carrying loads on the road. Is it not amazing to see a police sitting in the front seat of a lorry, tipper or pick-up vehicles carrying loads? For such vehicles to pass successfully on Lagos roads, they must take a police, having struck a deal with the officer on agreed amount of money/fee. Otherwise would have themselves blamed when such ones are stopped on the way. The stubborn ones might think they would escape on the road. These our expert officers are also clever by observing the tyres of on-coming vehicles in which anyone suspected t have to have his tyres near the ground is stopped for ‘interrogation’ which eventually will give in to their payment demand for failure to attach a policeman to the vehicle.

When will these corrupt practices end in the Nigeria Police? At what point in time are we going to have corrupt–free police force? Will it ever happen in this part f the world/ these and many more questions are t be answered and backed with actions, by the new IG before they can actually boast of fighting crimes. Till that happen, we will wait in anticipating and hope that it comes to pass
